Studying abroad is a life-changing opportunity in all its aspects. It provides not only academic developement, but also personal and cultural oppeness and growth to the world outside of a student's bubble. However, among several destinations, countless ideas and hundreds of personal experiences you can encounter from friends and relatives around you, such a decision can be confusing if it wasn't carefully planned and prepared.
With what I like to call the rule of three Ws, you don't need to worry as you'll find here the help you need to know where to begin and how to create a guidlined plan to start your journey.

Know your goals.

Why do I want to study abroad? What am I aiming for being a student abroad? Before digging into any details for your plan, it is essential that you understand your reasons, objectives and motives to such decision. Establishing your goals will help you stay focused on what is really important to you and what you truly desire to do with your life. In order to start your planning, you need to have a clear and decisive mind; identifying your goals will automatically lead you to eliminate all collateral and unnecessary options and direct your decision-making throughout the planning process:

  • How to identify goals: not all of us truly knew what we want to become in the future since the day we were born, and that's normal. You can decide what you want to do with your life by reflecting on your childhood dreams and passions, assessing your interests and strength points and how you can invest in them for your future.

Choose your field of study

Now that you understand your goals and the reasons why you want to pursue this path, you start reflecting on your second question: "What do I want to study?"
To answer this question you need to dive deeper in your mind than just picking a field based on your favourite school subject. It requires planning on spending your educational years wisely chiseling your interests to reach the career you wish to pursue.

  1. Create a vision board: after taking your time reflecting on your objectives and options to acheive them, start your plan by visualizing every optional path you have in mind by breaking it down to small manageable steps. You start listing your potentials and interests, then research on how to to acheive your goals considering what you desire for your future, what you can contribute with to your community, and what the present market is looking for.
  2. Visualize possible challenges: this step can help you build a structural mindset to what you can face and how to deal with it. Eventually, you'll find yourself prioritising your choices and eliminating unessential options to help you choose your path.

Research your options

Once you've settled on what career path you would choose, it's time to research your options.
"Where should I go to begin my studying journey?" Start by exploring different countries and cultures to find the one that best aligns with your interests and preferences. In your research journey, factors such as language, climate, cost of living, and cultural opportunities are improtant to consider in order to indentify the culture that most closely matches your interests and preferences. Next, investigate into different universities and their best academic programs that would suit you. Look for institutions that are well known in your field of study and provide strong related programs in addition to extracurricular and academic opportunities. Assess their admission requirements and policies, campus amneties, and support services delivered for international students. Additionally, familiarize yourself with visa requirements and any legal considerations specific to your chosen destination. Furthermore, search for all necessary prerequisites for obtaining a visa and any particular legal issues related to your intended location.

Your research for universities should involve taking into account its ranking, the faculties expertise, the campus culture, research possibilities and any academic facilities. Alumni networks and university websites are the best resrouces to know more about each institution.
Make that the courses and curricular frameworks that are offered fit your interests and, if applicable, seek advice from academic experts or counselors who can offer valuable insights and assist you in making decisions on your academic path.

Create a Timeline and secure funding

Careful planning and time management are necessary while preparing for a study abroad experience. Make a timeline that highlights important dates for applications, exams, filing applications for visas, and travel plans. Make a checklist to keep track of your progress. Make notes and schedule enough time for exam preparation, obtaining necessary paperwork, and finishing application materials to prevent stress or issues at the last minute.

Financing your study abroad journey is also a crucial part of the planning process while searching for scholarships intended for international students and funding alternatives provided by your preferred university or government authorities. Investigate numerous funding possibilities and make a budget to estimate your expenses; including tuition, housing, meals, travel, and personal expenses.

Consider part-time work or internships to increase your income and earn useful work experience while overseas. Check  Balancing work and study: A guide for international students in the US for reference to get an idea on how you can make it.
